Ellen Gallagher

"I would say the concept of repetition and revision, like you have in jazz or jungle music- where a conductor might ask to have a phrase played and then repeated and there’s this kind of call and response between the musician and the conductor, between the DJ and the audience- is central to my work. And what happens is that stackings develop between call and response."

Rubber, paper and enamel on linen, 96 x 120 inches

"I built a latticework grid and over that laid down very thin plywood and stretched the canvas over that. That way I could sit on the canvas as I began gluing down sheets of penmanship paper from top to bottom, left to right. Then I began drawing and painting into the pages, after they’d all been laid down in a skin. And they really became something that can be read both sheet to sheet and as an overall skin."

Beatriz Milhazes

Established Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes has attracted international attention with her colorful compositions since the 1990s. Her art features elements of both Brazilian pop culture and modern visual languages. Overlapping floral motifs, ornamental arabesques and abstract patterns convey an excessive, sensuous energy.

Raqib Shaw

Shaw's unique technique, where pools of enamel and metallic industrial paints are manipulated to the desired effect with a porcupine quill, meticulously enhances numerous details within the paintings, such as coral, feathers or flowers. Every motif is outlined in embossed gold, a technique to similar to ‘cloisonné’ found in early Asian pottery, which is a source of inspiration to Shaw, along with Uchikake (Japanese wedding kimonos), Byobu (screens), Hokusai prints, Kashmiri shawls, medieval heraldry and Persian miniatures, carpets and jewellery.
